The pelvic floor muscles act as a hammock that supports the pelvic organs and they encompass the anus, urethra and the vagina. They help to control the passing of urine and faeces and also play a role in sexual pleasure and orgasms (what amazing muscles)!
These muscles can become weak with ageing, pregnancy and following gynaecological surgery, but they can also become overactive and tight. This is Pelvic Floor Dysfunction, and can be a major contributing cause to all the conditions listed below.
In Physiotherapy we will investigate your medical history, lifestyle, eating and drinking habits as well as assess the strength, endurance, control and tension in the pelvic floor. Together with an assessment of how you move (squat, stand on one leg etc) and breathe, we will produce a treatment plan tailored to you.
